Ice Cream Vans

In the run up to the hottest days ever in Cornwall the ice cream vans at Pendennis Point did a roaring trade.  Long queues formed for both vendors.  Mid July 2022.  Oil on 6 x 8" MDF artist's panel.  Copyright © 2022 The Viridian.

Kings Ice Cream Van

A small sketch of a Kings, Cornish Ice Cream van at Pendennis Point in Falmouth.  July 2022.  One of the problems with Plein Air painting is the lack of control of the surroundings.  On this occasion some poor bloke parked his motorbike between me and the subject and then promptly broke down!  Fortunately, he restarted his bike allowing me to complete the sketch :-) Oil on 6 x 8" MDF artist's panel.  Copyright © 2022 The Viridian.

Boatspotting

Oil on 6 x 8" MDF artist's panel.  A quick sketch on a blustery, showery July day in 2022.   Loved this couple buttoned up against the gusts, sitting in their aluminium chairs boatspotting above the block house on Pendennis Point in Falmouth. They had binoculars and clipboards.  A serious pursuit!  Copyright © 2022 The Viridian.

Carn Galver

Quick sketch of Carn Galver, May 2022.  Oil on 9 x 12" MDF Artist's board primed with Michael Harding non-absorbent primer.

Penwith, Cornwall

Penwith is, perhaps, my favourite part of the fantastic county of Cornwall.   Set in the far west, jutting out in to the Atlantic it is rugged, rough and majestic with a unmatched quality of light.  At the sea's edge of Geevor Tin Mine the mineral rich waters stream out of the cliffs staining the earth red rocks the most wonderful shades of viridian and mint greens, yellows and purples along with the purest whites and the warmest pinks.

Langdale

April 2022.  I first visited the Langdale and the Mickleden Valley in the mid 1980's on geology school trips to learn about glaciation and I've been coming back on and off ever since.

Godolphin

Godolphin Hill - One of my favourite places to paint in central Cornwall. To visit park up in the Godolphin House National Trust car park a little west of Helston and make your way to the entrance to the house.  Just before the house entrance take the sign posted trail to the right up the hill.  On a good day great views towards St Michael's Mount and Penzance can be had.
