Van Dyck Master Copy 1
Master copy of a Van Dyck sketch of his, now lost, painting "The Magistrates of Brussels". Painted in December 2025 at the Sarum Studio Atelier in Salisbury, UK. Many thanks to Nick Beer for his suggestions and comments in the completion of this piece.
The original painting is (at the time of typing) on show at the fabulous Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
Van Dyck Master Copy 2
In February 2026 I painted a second master copy of a Van Dyck sketch of his, now lost, painting "The Magistrates of Brussels" at the Sarum Studio Atelier in Salisbury, UK. Many thanks to Nick Beer for his suggestions and comments in the completion of this piece.
I had less time for this copy, and, as the original was more sketchy than my first master copy it was, in many ways, harder to complete successfully.
The original painting is also (at the time of typing) on show at the fabulous Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
Van Dyck - work in progress
In January 2027 I'll be returning to the Sarum Studio Atelier to undertake a more ambitious project - to make a master copy of the fabulous Van Dyck painting of the Flemish merchant and art collector, Cornelis van der Geest. Painted circa 1620 this is a very early example of Van Dyck's genius as well as being one of my all time favourite portraits.
In preparation for this master copy, I spent a morning at the National Gallery in London sketching this painting in pencil in an A5 sketchbook.
